Efficiently tracking the movement and location of these containers is critical to ensuring timely delivery and replacement, maximizing container utilization, and preventing containers from becoming “lost” in the transport system.
To effectively manage container movements, Battery Rescue required a robust and reliable tracking solution that provided GPS location data, had a long battery life, and could withstand the extreme environmental conditions encountered in North Western Australia.
They chose to implement Digital Matter devices like the Yabby Edge and the Barra Edge, due to their ultra-rugged, battery-powered properties with 4G compatibility. These devices were selected for their versatile indoor and outdoor tracking capabilities, IP68-rated ultra-rugged waterproof housing, and 10+ years of battery life—ideal for the extended periods containers may spend at mining sites.
This tracking solution allowed Battery Rescue to efficiently monitor container deliveries, returns, and onsite durations without relying on transport paperwork from mining companies, which could cause delays in container replacement and affect container utilization.
Using Digital Matter battery-powered devices, Battery Rescue leveraged geofence alerts to maintain a tracking sheet that logs the movement dates of each container to and from mining sites. This system allows them to track the number of containers at each site, calculate how long they remain onsite, and identify average delivery and return times. Containers that take longer to return are promptly followed up with site managers to ensure timely retrieval. Additionally, the devices’ temperature logs provided insights into maximum temperatures, which, in some cases, exceeded 70°C. To combat this, Battery Rescue installed white reflective panels to shield devices from direct sunlight, reducing the internal temperature by 10 to 15 degrees Celsius.
Overall, the integration of Digital Matter tracking devices has greatly improved Battery Rescue’s ability to ensure an efficient supply of containers to mining customers, help their customers remain compliant and enhance onsite safety.
“Being able to ensure the efficiency of our container supply is critical for our mining customers. They do not want to face situations where no containers are onsite to store waste batteries. Without the ability to track and locate our containers, this issue would occur frequently.” — David Bush, General Manager at Battery Rescue.
